Moody’s In the face of higher frequency and severity of both major (earthquake, hurricanes) and less (but more often) major Natural Catastrophes events (such as flood, severe convective storm, or wildfires), NatCat models are becoming a fundamental toolkit supporting risk management practices, from earnings to solvency protection. This session will provide an overview about challenges and solutions for effective NatCat risk management.

From the perspective of the Norwegian Pool, If will provide an overview of how a pool solution could be applied when larger events occur. The session will cover claims and cost allocation, pricing models, and the additional contributions required from society alongside the pool, as well as future perspectives – how will we finance events going forward? This will be discussed in relation to statistics from the largest event since the establishment and statistics from the Storm Hans that affected both Sweden and Norway in August 2023, and where NOK 2 billion was covered by the pool and the societal cost reached NOK 7 billion
Sedgwick Christian Leif Hansen from Sedgwick will talk about the severe floodings that struck Denmark in autumn 2023 and hit Spain in autumn 2024. He will explore flooding compensation schemes in both countries played a crucial role in supporting the insurance industry. The presentation will lead into a discussion on whether Sweden should consider implementing a similar scheme to enhance its resilience against future climate-related risks.
Marsh Will we be able to buy insurance for NatCat and Extreme Weather Events? With a global perspective, this session will focus on the Nordic insurance market and reinsurance industry. Marsh will present the views that global insurance companies have on terms and premiums on the Nordic market. What Nat Cat perils are of interest in the Nordic market, considering the many high-loss events in recent years. Further the session will also discuss the challenges of buying insurance for Nat Cat events.
